Art in Public Places: The Public Arts Advisory Committee installed the Michael Swigart Memorial Sculpture on National Park Drive in 2009 in honor of the late Michael Swigart (1945-2008), for his support of the arts in Twentynine Palms. Swigart served as City Manager 2002-2006 and was instrumental in formation of Art in Public Places and the City's Public Arts Program and Public Arts Advisory Committee.
This 20-foot steel sculpture by artist Simi Dabah (of Joshua Tree/Los Angeles) was donated to the City of Twentynine Palms for the memorial. A dedication was held on March 20, 2009, followed by a reception at 29 Palms Inn. More than 75 prominent citizens, artists, and city officials attended the festivities and experienced a renewed sense of community spirit at the event. Support for public art in Twentynine Palms is entering a new phase. Watch for more City sculpture installations coming soon!
